PTA vs Community Council
In our local school system there are two formal organizations where parents and community members can have a voice at the education table at the school. PTA and Community Council. These two groups fill different roles in the school.
Escalante Schools PTA focuses on assisting teachers and
students with activities that support school goals. The PTA in Escalante
supports both Escalante Elementary and Escalante High School and we strive to
be the bridge that connects the school with the community. The activities we’re
focusing on this year is the subject of another blog post, but in a nutshell,
we’re around to help out in fun ways. Anyone can join PTA, although you don’t
have to be a PTA member to volunteer at our activities. If you want to help in
this way, we need you!
The Community Council is a much more formal board and every
school must have one by law. Both Escalante Elementary and High School have a separate
Community Council. So, what is a community council? Here is the backstory. The
Utah School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration (SITLA) manages 3.4
million acres of trust lands to generate revenue from energy/mineral royalties
and real estate/surface development. Our local schools get a chunk of that money—about
$55,000 between both schools! The Community Council decides how that money is
spent. They make goals for expected outcomes for the money, monitor the
progress of those goals, and report the results at the end of the school year.
They also have input into other school plans such as the School Behavior Plan,
the Teacher Student Success plan, and the School Safety plan, among other ad
hoc assignments. The Community Council is made up of parents and school staff—with
a parental majority. Community Council is an excellent way to have a say in
what happens inside the school.
EHS Community Council meets the 2nd Tuesday of
every month at 3:15 in the EHS Library.
EES Community Council meets the 1st Tuesday of every
month at 3:15 in an EES Classroom.
